Next up in the endangered species of Virginia series:
The hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricate) can grow up to three feet in length and weigh up to 300 pounds. This marine turtle is extremely rare in Northeast waters. It frequents rocky areas, coral reefs and shallow coastal areas, feeding primarily on sponges. The population of the endangered hawksbill sea turtle declined primarily due to illegal exploitation of its shell. Other threats include loss of nesting habitat from coastal development and nest predation. -US Fish and Wildlife @usfws

Next up in my series of endangered species of Virginia sketches: American Chaffseed.⠀
⠀
A member of the figwort family, American chaffseed (Schwalbea Americana) grows from 12 to 24 inches high with large, purplish-yellow tubular flowers that form a spike-like cluster. Dependent on factors such as fire and mowing to maintain the open conditions it requires, this endangered plant is found in communities where grasses and sedges are numerous. Threats to the American chaffseed include over-collection, excessive disturbance, and loss of open habitat to development.⠀

Showcasing this hand-wrought paintbrush holder made by my husband Kevin! He has a forge and is learning how to work metal. Always needing new project ideas, he asked me if I could think of something I could use in my art studio that he could make out of metal rebar. This is something I actually need! Paintbrush rests are great for keeping the hairs of the brush elevated. They dry faster than when left on damp paper towel. Plus they are easier to organize and find when splayed out like this rather than in one big pile to the side of the workspace. Swipe to see some closeups of the piece itself. I could not be happier with how it turned out!

Each October, pen and ink artists participate in a challenge called #inktober spearheaded by artist @jakeparker. The challenge was created to push artists to draw consistently for the month of October. This year I’ve decided to participate for the first time, however, I’m bending the rules a little to fit my schedule and I’ve been inspired to create my own drawing prompt.

I’m passionate about nature and have recently been learning more about the ecosystems around me here in Virginia. I assumed that there might be a few species on the endangered list but, unfortunately, I discovered that the list was very long. I’ve got a lot to learn and I figured I’d bring you along with me as I draw each of the plants and animals on the list! Because there are so many species to draw, this challenge will extend beyond the boundaries of October until I feel like it’s relatively complete. I’ll also be alternating these posts with updates on upcoming craft shows, shop news, and products! Without further ado, first up is: “The Roanoke logperch (Percina rex) is a small fish growing to 5 inches in length that feeds on invertebrates by flipping stones on the stream bottom with its snout. It occurs in 13 populations in widely separated segments of the upper Roanoke, Pigg, Nottoway and Upper Dan rivers. The logperch has strongly patterned fins, a prominent bar below the eye and 8 to 11 vertical bands on its sides. Massive loss of Roanoke logperch habitat has occurred due to construction of the large impoundments of the Roanoke River Basin in the 1950s and 1960s, which resulted in major disruptions in the ability of this species to move throughout its historic range. Biologists are working to protect its habitat by reducing upland runoff into rivers.” -US Fish and Wildlife Service @USFWS

A hand painted birthday card for a lovely lady! Now that the birthday has passed I can share the card. She and I are kindred spirits in that we long for Ireland. Some colors, textures, and patterns here in the studio that brighten my day. I’ve been dealing with a summer cold lately and when I’m not feeling my best, my motivation dwindles, even if I feel creatively inspired. Keeping my collection of things nearby helps keep me on task and in the studio longer.
